Building Up the Traditional Tilled Plots with Drip Irrigation

Irrigation Setup: Take One

Running into dehydrated plants this summer, we looked into automating the watering. We stumbled on an inexpensive drip irrigation kit online with bending adjustable sprayers. We’d already harvested what was available in the traditional plots but wanted to test if we could manage pumpkins before Halloween. (We couldn’t- squash bugs. Enough said.)

We set up a small test section- enough to line 2 sides of the first tilled plot. Within 10 minutes, the plot would be flooded. We found that between 5 and 10 minutes of run time was enough to water the 8×8 plot.

Don’t judge the dried-out dead looking pumpkin vines. We had gone on a weekend trip to my brother’s graduation and the rain wasn’t on our side.

Irrigation For the Expanded Plots

While putting the rest of the set away, we found a card. It said if we reviewed the irrigation kit, they’d send us a second one for free. Who could hate free? So, Marcus set to fill out his review and cash in on a prize. The second set we got looked nothing like the first but had a lot more to it. It had some direct attachments that shot water out in a straight line and some rounded heads that watered in eight directions.

The hosing on the second kit was a slightly different size too. They have the same inner diameter, so the all the pieces from the second kit work with the first kit, but not the other way around. There was some planning and rearranging to make the setup work since they were only compatible in one direction.

Red is all direction misters, orange is single direction, and blue is the original adjustable set.

It’s set up and matches the plan above, but the rain we wanted in the summer finally showed up and won’t leave. I’ll get a picture of the functioning final set up as soon as the weather cooperates!
