The (Castle) Coop is Coming Along!

The babies are growing, and they need a coop! A bigger coop. This week, we’ve started building the base for the building. Due to height limitations made by the run I bought, a castle isn’t happening this round. BUT I have ideas on how to add castle elements in to give the chickies the Disney vibe.

The Main Coop Design

I made a *vague* design in Tinkercad to give us an idea of how to put the coop together. This past weekend, Marcus and I put together the base and bought concrete and gravel. Our next step is to sink the base just over a foot into the ground. For whatever reason it is endlessly windy here and I’d hate for my chickens to feel like tumbleweeds.

Upcoming Coop Design

Next, we’ll be framing and putting in flooring and the walls! Past the framework, the idea is to add in swivel roosting bars for easy cleaning and anti-roost nesting boxes. And for castle touches, two spires at the front that will double as containers for grit and oyster shells. I’m still working on the brick look. It turns out, mortar isn’t waterproof unless you make it that way, so carving bricks out is being back-burnered. At least until I work out the kinks.

I’m excited to get to sit with my Disney chickies! Only holding a couple at a time isn’t as fun as hanging out with them in their run. Their field trips to the small coop doesn’t grant much freedom either. I can’t wait for the castle coop!
