Cinnamon Star bread

Valentine’s Day Date Recipe: Cinnamon Star Bread

Happy February! Being in the slower months, I don’t have much to update on the homestead side. But seeing that Valentine’s Day is coming up, I thought I’d share a way Marcus and I bond in the kitchen! We like to bake together at all hours of the day. It’s a wonderful way to spend time with your significant other and this star bread is so fun to make. If you wanted to make it more Valentine’s Day themed, you could use Nutella filling and strawberries or use a little beetroot powder to give the star a pink hue. Happy Baking Date Night!

  • Pizza Cutter makes cutting the slices much easier

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Warm water 90-100 degrees Farenheit
  • 2 Tbsp Honey
  • 2 Tbsp Butter melted
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 Egg
  • 1.25 tsp Instant Yeast
  • 4-5 cups Flour all-purpose flour

Filling Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp Butter softened
  • 1 Tbsp Cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp Nutmeg
  • 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Flour
  • Powdered Sugar optional

Instructions

  • In a bowl or stand mixer, combine warm water, honey, butter, salt, egg and yeast.
1 Cup Warm water, 2 Tbsp Honey, 2 Tbsp Butter, 1 tsp Salt, 1 Egg, 1.25 tsp Instant Yeast
  • Add in flour and begin mixing.
    4-5 cups Flour
  • Continue adding flour by half cup measurements until dough pulls away cleanly from the bowl while mixing.
    4-5 cups Flour
  • Cover the bowl with a damp towel and keep dough in a warm place to double in size. Usually around an hour
  • Combine cinnamon, brown sugar, nutmeg, and flour in a small bowl to use as the filling.
1 Tbsp Cinnamon, 1/8 tsp Nutmeg, 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar, 1 Tbsp Flour
  • Flour work surface and turn dough out.
  • Divide dough into three equal parts.
  • Roll first dough ball into a disc about a 1/4 inch thick.
  • Spread half the butter onto the disc, leaving a half inch border unbuttered.
    3 Tbsp Butter
  • Top butter with half of the cinnamon mix.
  • Transfer disc to cookie sheet and begin rolling out second disc in the same fashion.
  • Repeat topping instructions and place second disc on top of first.
  • Crimp edges together to seal in cinnamon mix.
  • Roll out third disc and place on top of first two, sealing edges together.
  • Use a pizza cutter to cut 16 strips around the circle, leaving a 1.5-2 inch ring in the middle uncut.
  • Take two adjacent strips and twist them away from each other twice, then pinch the tips together.
  • Repeat with the other 14 strips.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Let star rest another 30 minutes
  • Bake star 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown
  • Remove from oven and let cool slightly before adding powdered sugar.
  • Top with powdered sugar and serve

Notes

The flour measurement is more of a guideline that changes with the humidity in your home, the moisture content of your dough and how much you or your mixer are working the dough. Start with three cups of flour and gradually add 1/2 a cup at a time while mixing until you reach a dough consistency.
